Celebrate Good Times

Friday July 10th marked 20 years with Dr. Collins serving our community. Between his passion for providing excellent patient care and serving as a support system among his fellow faculty members, along with his clinical expertise and knowledge, Dr. Collins continues to prove how vital he is to our department.

Congratulations on 20 years, Dr. Collins!

A Round of Applause!

This month, our very own Dr. Brown was recognized as the 2026 Surgical Faculty Teacher of the Year across UF’s COM faculty. Dr. Brown represented the excellence necessary for surgical instruction, mentorship, and dedication to helping the next generation of physicians develop the necessary technical and clinical skills. We want to thank Dr. Brown for all he has done, whether it’s representing our department, serving the community, or providing expertise to students

Back in the Lab

Earlier this month, our residents put together a skills lab, in which the incoming residents had the opportunity to practice foundational otolaryngology skills using creative, low-cost simulation models. Modeled after prior skills labs, the session was designed to help our new residents and APPs build comfort and confidence with techniques they will begin using in clinical practice this year.

The lab featured four hands-on stations:

– Laryngoscopy: Residents practiced flexible laryngoscopy using a makeshift skull and larynx model – and an unlucky junior resident who volunteered their nose for a live demonstration.

– Otoscopy: Using a low-cost ear model, residents practiced otoscopic examination and foreign body removal (wax, seeds, and grains) from the simulated ear canal.

SkillsLab

– Rhinoscopy: Residents practiced rigid nasal endoscopy and foreign body retrieval, navigating a carved-out bell pepper to locate and remove embedded seeds.

– Suturing: Residents practiced suture placement along with instrument tie and hand tie techniques.

These stations provided a fun, approachable introduction to the core procedural skills of otolaryngology, setting the stage a great training year ahead.

See You Next Time!
