From the “Sub-Sterile”

A message from the Chair: Bill Collins

As an amateur history enthusiast, I love learning about and celebrating the past. When history overlaps with my work family, the results are even better! Engaging with our past renews my energy and motivates me to keeping working hard to train the next generation of Otolaryngologists. And when given the opportunity to spend time in the company of those giants who came before me, it humbles me to think how much our department has grown.

Both of these scenarios have come to fruition in the past several months. Frequent texts and phone calls from former residents always brighten my day, but the annual opportunity to get together in person at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Otolaryngology- Head & Neck Surgery is an extra special to share some beverages and laugh about the old days. Even more unique, however, was the opportunity to enjoy dinner and conversations with three of our former department chairs- legends each and everyone. There are several reasons that I am reminded everyday of the tremendous fortune that I have to work in such a great department. Being able to be part of something bigger than just me is at the top of that personal gratitude list. I hope to connect with many of you over the upcoming year!

Alumni Gather at American Academy of Otolaryngology Meeting in Miami

In October 2024, UF ENT alumni gathered in Miami at the annual American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery for a highly anticipated reunion event. The atmosphere was filled with excitement, nostalgia, and professional camaraderie as former residents, faculty members, and medical students reunited to celebrate the impact the program had on their lives and careers. Having the annual meeting in our home state of Florida allowed us to exceed expectations, highlighting the enduring connections forged during the residency years and showcasing the ongoing influence of the program.

The residency alumni reunion was held at The Betsy Hotel on Miami Beach. The event was marked by laughter and shared memories, as people reminisced about their experiences during the residency and the formative moments that shaped their professional journeys.

The alumni reunion held in Miami in October 2024 was a resounding success, bringing together a diverse group of individuals who continue to make waves in their respective careers. With thoughtful planning, engaging activities, and a spirit of camaraderie, the event reinforced the profound impact of the residency program and solidified the lifelong connections made during the training.

As alumni left Miami, many reflected on the lasting influence of the program and the importance of staying connected. The reunion not only celebrated the past but also served as a catalyst for future reunions. In the end, it was a testament to the enduring strength of the residency program and the powerful network of professionals it has helped shape.

In a rare and heartfelt gathering, four former UF Otolaryngology department chairmen reunited with the current department chairman for an evening of reflection, camaraderie, and conversation. The dinner, hosted by former resident Dr. Jack Sedwick (UF ENT residency class of 2002), took place at Spurrier’s Gridiron Grille restaurant in November 2024, bringing together leaders who had shaped the department over several decades. It was an occasion to honor their collective contributions to the department’s legacy and to celebrate the impact they have had on UF Otolaryngology residents over the years.

The reunion of these five leaders, united by their dedication to the department and its enduring mission, was not only a celebration of the past but also a reaffirmation of the values that continue to guide the department today. The evening, rich with shared memories and mutual respect, underscored the importance of mentorship, collaboration, and forward-thinking leadership in ensuring the continued success of the department.

In the end, it was a dinner that honored the past, celebrated the present, and inspired the future—an evening that exemplified the spirit of unity and progress that defines the department and its community.
