Guest Lecturers:

MALEKZADEH

Sonya Malekzadeh, MD, FACS, is Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Georgetown University School of Medicine, Vice Chair for Education and Residency Program Director in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.

Dr. Malekzadeh is a leader in the field of medical education and simulation.  Her vision and work have led to the development and dissemination of several innovative training tools and programs.  COCLIA (Comprehensive Otolaryngologic Curriculum, Learning Through Interactive Approach), an on-line longitudinal course, is utilized by many otolaryngology residency programs. She created a series of low-cost simulators to onboard novice residents with basic surgical skills. Over a decade ago, she helped to develop the first ORL Emergencies Boot Camp and continues to co-direct this annual event. She is currently pursuing the development of a national boot camp to ensure broad access and curriculum standardization.

Active in local and national societies, she has chaired and served as member of numerous committees. As Education Coordinator for the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS), she led to the development of educational products and programming for the Foundation’s membership. She is a past member of their Board of Directors and was also the inaugural Chair of the Women in Otolaryngology Section.  Dr. Malekzadeh is the past-Chair of the Otolaryngology Program Directors Organization and President of the Society of University Otolaryngologists.

Dr. Malekzadeh has been honored many times with outstanding professional awards. She is the recipient of the 2017 Karen Gale Outstanding Achievement Award at Georgetown and the 2011 AAO-HNS Helen B Krause Trailblazer Award, recognizing her efforts in mentoring and supporting women in medicine.  She received multiple Outstanding Teaching Awards for her educational commitment within the Department of Otolaryngology.

Dr. Malekzadeh received her medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC, where she also completed her internship in general surgery. After fulfilling her residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at The University of Maryland in Baltimore, she joined the faculty in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Georgetown in 2001. She served as Chief of ENT at the Washington DC Veteran’s Hospital from 2008-2018.

FORGHANI

Reza Forghani, MD, PhD is a neuro and head and neck radiologist and clinician scientist with medical AI expertise. He completed his MD and PhD degrees at McGill University, with a PhD in molecular and cell biology. After completing his Diagnostic Radiology Residency at McGill University in 2008, he completed a Diagnostic Neuroradiology Fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School.  He is currently Professor of Radiology & Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Vice Chair of AI at the Department of Radiology, University of Florida College of Medicine where he is also the founder and director of the Radiomics & Augmented Intelligence Laboratory (RAIL) at the Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases. Dr. Forghani’s area of scientific interest is translational multi-modal AI, with the use of medical imaging for clinically impactful AI algorithm development. This includes specific interest in AI applications in head & neck imaging. Another core activity of the RAIL lab is to use clinical domain expertise to help translation and adoption of medical AI algorithms, working across different disciplines and with industry partners with the aim of developing clinically impactful AI tools that have the highest likelihood of adoption, so that they can be brought into clinical practice to impact every patient’s journey in the healthcare enterprise. Lastly, Dr. Forghani is also an expert in spectral imaging and the RAIL lab is involved both in research projects and academic-industry collaboration in peer-to-peer education for adoption of spectral CT.

Dr. Kian Karimi, MD, FACS, is a distinguished figure in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, holding dual certifications from the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery. Graduating medical school at 23, he earned the Alpha Omega Alpha Award, recognizing the top 10% of students nationwide. Acknowledged with the Resident Teacher of The Year Award early in his career, Dr. Karimi’s pursuit of mastery led him to a transformative fellowship under the guidance of Steve Adamson, a world-renowned rhinoplasty and facelift surgeon. Today, his Los Angeles practice showcases excellence in advanced facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, including groundbreaking procedures like the Deep Plane Face Lift, NoseTune®, and Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty. Dr. Karimi’s innovative spirit is evident in his role in popularizing minimally invasive techniques, introducing cannulas, threads, and Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) in the United States. His commitment to education is highlighted by co-founding the Los Angeles Multispecialty Cosmetic Academy (LA-MCA), recognized as a premier forum for aesthetic medicine and surgery. As a recurring guest on various media outlets, Dr. Karimi shares his expertise and insights. Grounded in ethical considerations, his approach to patient care emphasizes meticulous customization, ensuring each individual’s aesthetic journey is thoughtful and compassionate. Dr. Kian Karimi’s narrative is one of continuous growth and innovation, marked by early accolades, transformative mentorship, and a dedication to shaping the future of facial plastic surgery through education, collaboration, and patient-centered care.
